(Napoleon, Ind.) – Napoleon firefighters received not one, but two early calls Thursday morning.

The first dispatch was around 1:00 a.m. for a suspected electrical fire at a home on State Road 48 near 100E.

Upon arrival, firefighters found interior smoke alarms activated, and a light haze throughout much of the home. The residents were allowed back in the home after about an hour of investigation. Firefighters say the smoke dissipated; however, a source of the smoke could not be determined.

A second call came in just before 3:00 a.m. for a chimney fire at a home on County Road 300W.

Firefighters say a fire ignited inside a wood stove pipe and spread into the lower section of the chimney. The fire was extinguished quickly using a special “torpedo” tool designed to drop down the chimney from the roof.

The chimney was deemed unsafe to resume use.

The Napoleon Volunteer Fire Department encourages regular inspection of chimneys. In addition, the department urges anyone with a fire in their chimney to call for help immediately – citing Thursday morning’s fire as an incident that “could have easily resulted in a total loss of the home.”

No injuries were reported at either incident.
