(Cleves, Oh.) – The search for a Cleves woman missing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park reached a disappointing end Tuesday.

National Park Service officials say the body of Mitzie “Susan” Clements, 53, was found after a week-long search.

Clements’ body was found about two miles west of the Clingman’s Dome parking area and three-quarters of a mile south of the Appalachian trail.

“Our hearts are with the family and friends of Ms. Clements. The park would like to extend our appreciation to the many agencies and organizations that participated in the search effort,” a statement from the park service read.

Clements was hiking with her daughter last week when they became separated on the Forney Ridge Trail near Clingman’s Dome.

Additional details about Clements’ death have not been released. Rangers said further information will be provided.

More than 125 people part of search crews were joined by dogs and drones in the search for Clements over the past week. They scoured over 500 miles of trail in the effort to find her.

Searchers had to look across some rugged terrain in order to locate the body of Mitzie "Susan" Clements. Photo by Jeff Wadley, Backcountry Search and Rescue.
