Hoosiers are getting a third option for gender on their driver's license or state ID card.
(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now offering a non-specific gender option for residents.
Hoosiers can be marked as an "X" on their driver's license or state ID card, The Northwest Indiana Times reports. The option is being made available for those who identify as neither male or female.
A spokeswoman for the Indiana BMV said the agency is offering the third gender option based on credential standards recommended by the American Academy of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
Hoosiers asking for the “X” gender designation on their license or ID card will be asked to present documentation such as a certified, amended birth certificate attesting to a gender change, or a signed and dated letter from a physician about a person’s gender change.
Five other states and Washington, D.C. also offer a non-binary option on a driver’s license, including Oregon, Maine, Minnesota, Colorado and California.
