IDHS Offers Winter Power Outage Tips

Something to keep in mind with potential inclement weather this weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS – With a potential winter storm heading towards the Midwest, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is passing along helpful safety tips in case of a power outage.

  • Gather everyone in the most insulated and interior room available
  • Turn off and unplug most electronics to avoid a power surge. Leave one light on to know when the power has been restored
  • Block drafts with blankets or towels at the base of doors and windows to stop heat from sneaking out
  • Dress in layered warm clothing. Many lose heat through hands and feet, so warm gloves and socks are necessary
  • Listen to the radio or monitor social media for updates. Having a battery powered weather radio can be helpful
