I-71 Resurfacing, Widening Project Proposed in Gallatin Co.

The KYTC is asking the public to share their thoughts by August 17.

(Gallatin County, Ky.) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has designed improvements for a portion of Interstate 71 in Gallatin County.

A resurfacing and widening project could start in winter 2024 or spring 2025 from the KY 1039 interchange to the KY 35 interchange.

The proposed project aims to address existing pavement base deterioration with deep milling, breaking and seating of the underlying concrete pavement, and overlaying with asphalt pavement.

The project also proposes widening of this section of I-71 towards the inside to create a flush median with concrete median barrier wall and three lanes of traffic in each direction. Bridges over KY 47 would be replaced with a new, single span bridge with a typical section matching the median widening proposed.

According to the KYTC, widening will improve mobility and relieve congestion in the area. By widening to three lanes, existing and future traffic demands would be accommodated. Three lanes would also allow for two lanes of traffic to be maintained during construction activities.

The current estimate for all phases of this project is approximately $47.6 million.
