INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since 2005, the northern lights may be visible in Indiana.

A G4 Aurora Watch is in effect Friday night into Saturday morning, according to the Indiana Weather Network.

During G4 events, the aurora may be visible overhead as far south as Interstate 70 and on the horizon for everyone else.

An upgrade to G5 would allow for the aurora to be seen overhead statewide.

The Indiana Weather Network says the best area to view the aurora appears to be along the Ohio River in southern Indiana. The event is expected to take place from around 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM with peak hours from midnight to 3:00 AM.
