(INDIANAPOLIS) – Governor Eric Holcomb visited Afghanistan evacuees at Camp Atterbury this week.

Located 40 miles south of Indianapolis, Camp Atterbury is one of eight sites across the United States that is hosting Afghan evacuees.

Approximately 65,000 Afghans were evacuated from their homeland following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

Around 2,500 evacuees can currently be temporarily housed at Camp Atterbury as part of Operation Allies Welcome.

Task Force Atterbury, consisting of active-duty and National Guard service members supporting this federal mission, is providing housing, medical, logistics, and transportation to the evacuees.

"I'm so proud to see the work being done by the Indiana National Guard and our federal partners in such a short time to help these evacuees," Gov. Holcomb said. "There has been an outpouring of kindness from Hoosiers to welcome those who aided and protected us.”
