(Southeast Indiana) - Genesis: Pathways to Success is proud to celebrate the successful conclusion of Science Behind Baking Camp, an engaging A Summer of STREAM experience that combined nutrition education, teamwork, and hands-on baking. Throughout the camp, students explored the science behind baking while developing valuable life skills in the kitchen.

The camp began with a special visit from registered dietitian Kathy Cooley, who taught students about the importance of healthy eating habits, nutrition, and making informed food choices. Her presentation helped campers understand the connection between food, health, and the ingredients they would be using throughout the week. Each day of camp began with a group discussion where students learned about the day's objectives, recipes, baking techniques, and the science behind the foods they would be creating. Campers then worked together in teams to apply those lessons through hands-on baking experiences.

On the first day of camp, students learned how to safely use kitchen tools, follow recipes, and cooperate with their teammates while baking cookies and making Rice Krispie treats. Campers quickly discovered that baking requires teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to carefully follow directions. The second day allowed students to showcase their creativity as they baked and decorated their own cupcakes while continuing to build confidence in the kitchen. Campers also had the opportunity to make homemade pretzels and bread from scratch. Each group created a different variety, including traditional yeast bread, banana bread, and cinnamon bread, allowing campers to explore different ingredients and baking methods.

"I've had so much fun this week," said Nolan Wanstrath, 8th grader at St. Louis Catholic School. "I didn't realize how much goes into baking. It was fun learning new skills and getting to taste what we made, especially the cinnamon bread."

The camp provided students with a fun and engaging environment where they learned practical kitchen skills, explored food science concepts, and developed teamwork and communication skills. Through measuring ingredients, following recipes, and working together to solve challenges, campers gained valuable experience that extends far beyond baking.

Genesis extends its sincere appreciation to Kathy Cooley for sharing her expertise and helping students understand the importance of healthy eating and nutrition. Genesis also thanks the Tyson Fund, Tri Kappa, Ripley County Community Foundation, and the Versailles Lions Club for their generous financial support of A Summer of STREAM programming. Their investment helps provide meaningful educational opportunities that inspire learning, creativity, and personal growth for youth throughout Southeastern Indiana.
