(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Nostalgic, iconic, historic.
Those are some words to describe the Walnut Theater in downtown Lawrenceburg.
Earlier this year, the long dormant theater came under new ownership when BPS Movements, Inc., a nonprofit organization, purchased the building on January 13 for $190,000.
Their vision is to create a performing arts space that is capable of hosting unique events such as open mic nights, improv, special screenings, and intimate musical performances.
Before any of that can happen, the building needs a new roof.
BPS Movements is asking community members to join an online fundraiser
"The Walnut shouldn't just live in the memories of this community, it can live in the future. Your donation, big or small, means you're taking part in a collaborative effort to ensure The Walnut will no longer sit in disrepair," reads the fundraiser website.
BPS Movements hope to have the Walnut Theater restored, active and bustling by the year 2025, which happens to be the 100th anniversary of the Walnut Theater.
To get there, a fundraising goal of $300,000 has been set to help fund renovations at the theater. Along with repairing the roof, other repairs needed include fixing holes in the ceiling, some redesign, modernizing the sound system, installing a green room, and potentially adding tables and chairs.
