Florence Man In Custody After 8 Hour Standoff With Boone County Officers

This incident happened early this morning.

(Boone Co., Ky.) - Boone County officers now have a suspect in custody after an eight hour standoff early this morning.

Just before 1:00 a.m., Boone County Officers were called to the scene involving a subject with a weapon.

When deputies arrived, the two family members in the home were able to safely exit the home unharmed.

The subject, Curtis Zimmerman, 55, refused commands by the officers to leave the home leading to the standoff lasting until 8:25 a.m.

Ultimately, Zimmerman surrendered himself to the Boone County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and the Florence Police Department SWAT Team after speaking with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team.

During an investigation it was learned that Zimmerman was intoxicated and challenged his son to an arm-wrestling contest. After losing multiple times, Zimmerman became upset leading to a physical altercation. Zimmerman then grabbed a firearm as his son was heading upstairs, and he fired two shots. Zimmerman claims that the shots went into the ceiling of the home.

After being taken into custody, Zimmerman was taken to to St. Elizabeth in Florence for evaluation.

Deputies obtained a warrant of arrest for Zimmerman during the standoff. Once he is medically cleared, Zimmerman will be placed under arrest and charged with one count of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (Class D Felony).

Zimmerman will be transported to the Boone County Detention Center and held under a $5,000 cash bond.
