Flooding Devastates Switzerland, Jefferson Counties

(Switzerland County, Ind.) – Residents of Switzerland and Jefferson counties are trying to rebound after devastating flooding occurred over the weekend.

An estimated nine inches of rainfall fell in Switzerland and Jefferson counties over a three-hour span on Saturday.

One fatality has been reported. According to Jefferson County Emergency Management, the body of a Jefferson County woman was located about five miles downstream.

The flooding also caused damage to many homes and roads.

The following roads remain closed in Switzerland County:

  • Nell Lee Road (gravel section)
  • Drakes Ridge Road (gravel section)
  • Sgt. Kenneth Booker (gravel section)
  • Liter Road (gravel section) - Patriot Water has issued a boil advisory until further notice for Liter Road due to a water main break in the creek. Flash flooding exposed and broke the water main in the creek.
  • Kelly Road
  • State Road 250 bridge over Indian Creek

The Switzerland County High School football team spent a few hours this weekend deconstructing and reassembling a driveway bridge for a player’s grandparent. Photos can be seen below. 

Others are stepping up to help throughout the county too.

According to the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office, donations are being accepted at 2976 State Road 250 at the intersection with Bennington Pike. Monetary donations, gifts cards, bottled water, toiletries, and non-perishable items are being accepted.
