(Milan, Ind.) – Students and staff at Milan Community Schools will have the day off Friday after a small fire damaged Milan Elementary School overnight.
The Milan Fire Department was called to the school at 418 E. Carr Street at about 10:23 Thursday night for a report of a fire in the kitchen area. Nighttime janitors noticed the fire and quickly called 911.
Milan Fire Department Lt. Mike Alloway said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.
Nobody was injured, but smoke damage was spread throughout the building.
Crews will be at the school to clean up the smoke residue Friday and through the weekend. For that reason, the entire district will have classes cancelled Friday.
Extracurricular activities will go on as planned. Students attending the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles will also board buses on schedule.
Here is the statement from Milan Community Schools regarding the fire:
“Due the residual effects of a small fire in the kitchen of Milan Elementary School last night, and upon the recommendation of the Milan Fire Department, there will be no school in Milan today. Thanks to the quick, professional response of our volunteer firefighters, the fire was contained and there was no general damage to the building. We will be back in school on Monday. In order to keep all students on the same schedule, MMS and MHS are also closed. However, extracurricular activities are not cancelled, and the Career Center buses will still run on schedule.”
