(Aurora, Ind.) - South Dearborn High School has brought back its FCCLA program for students.

The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club hosted a Veterans Day Luncheon for local vets at the high school Sunday.

The South Dearborn FCCLA is advised by teacher Bryan Schuerman, who has helped revive the program.

“After not having FCCLA at South Dearborn for the last few years, being offered the position of FCCLA Adviser here, has really energized me to helping these students have the same experiences I did when I was in FCCLA in high school. This program teaches students how to be leaders as well as crucial skills that will be valuable in any stage of our students’ lives,” says Schuerman.

South Dearborn FCCLA students attended the Indiana FCCLA Fall Leadership Rally at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September. According to the school, throughout the day long event, students took part in leadership, membership and community service training, skill and knowledge competitive events as well as heard from guest speakers to get students energized about becoming leaders in their communities. Students in grades 6-8 also took part in the iBuckleUp and weBuckleUp Program which focuses on the importance of seat belt and traffic safety in their communities.

South Dearborn also hosted the FCCLA District 12 meeting in October.

“I am very happy to see our students excelling at leadership training and FCCLA here at South Dearborn,” says principal Dr. Jeff Bond. “Our students need positive peer influences like our students in FCCLA, and their commitment to making our school a better place is one of the things that sets South Dearborn apart from other schools.”

FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
