(Frankfort, Ky.) – The FBI is reportedly looking into pardons made by former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.
It’s been nearly two weeks since Bevin issued the pardons and commutations to over 650 inmates. Some of those inmates had been convicted of murder, child molesting and rape, among other crimes.
One of the pardons had a local tie. Micah Schoettle, 40, of Erlanger, was freed after serving less than two years of a 23-year-sentence for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old.
According to the Courier-Journal, State Rep. Chris Harris (D) told reporters that a criminal investigator contacted him regarding Bevin’s last-minute pardons.
One pardon in particular has raised some eyebrows. Patrick Baker was convicted in 2014 with reckless homicide and first-degree robbery. He was among the pardons, and some think it has to do with Baker’s brother and sister-in-law hosting a fundraising event for Bevin in 2018.
It has been reported that Bevin received a letter from one of the state’s Republican mega-donors, urging him to pardon Baker.
Bevin is welcoming the investigation, citing that his pardons had nothing to do with political gifts.
