(Burlington, Ky.) – The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to look for answers in the slaying of a mother and her nine-year-old son.

Kelli Kramer, 31, and her son, Aiden were found dead at an apartment building on the 5900 block of Peoples Lane in Burlington early Wednesday morning.

Police say both suffered from apparent gunshot wounds, but the manner and method of the killings won’t be determined until autopsies can be completed.

Kelli’s father, John Kramer told FOX 19 that he and his had returned home from a trip to Florida on Monday and had not seen their daughter and grandson since they’ve been back.

Kramer said he and his wife had custody of Aiden for five years, while Kelli struggled with drug addiction. A little more than a year ago, she had gotten clean and regained custody of her son.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the person who called 911 about the deaths claimed to be Kelli’s boyfriend. Her family said they were unaware she had a boyfriend.

The unidentified man said he had talked to Kelli earlier that evening and was checking to make sure she got home ok. When he was unable to make contact with her he drove to her apartment to find her and her son dead.

The sheriff’s office says they don’t believe the killer forced way into the apartment. Investigators also said Aiden likely wasn’t a target, but the person decided to kill him along with his mother – possibly to eliminate a witness.

Kelli Kramer was an employee of the Starbucks in Florence. Aiden was a fourth grade student at Burlington Elementary.

Their funerals will likely be held on Tuesday.

No arrests have been announced and no suspects have been named. Anyone with information should contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at (859) 334-2175.
