Explosions Planned This Week At Jefferson Proving Ground

Nearby residents have reported hearing and feeling the blasts in years past.

(Ripley County, Ind.) – Explosions will be heard at the Jefferson Proving Ground this week.

The Indiana Air National Guard will be detonating ordnance at the former military base turned wildlife preserve on Wednesday, August 14; Thursday, August 15; and Friday, August 16.

The blasts will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.

Residents nearby and even miles away from the proving ground have reported hearing or feeling the explosions during the Indiana Air National Guard’s operations in the past.

More than 160,000 pounds of depleted uranium ammunition is believed to be in the ground at the proving ground.

The ammunition was tested at the site from 1941 up until 1995 when the grounds closed.
