Newly Elected Gov. Andy Beshear Plans To Disband, Recreate Board Of Educator

The governor signed an executive order on Tuesday.

(Frankfort, Ky.) – In his first act as Governor, Andy Beshear has signed an Executive Order ousting 10 members from the Kentucky Board of Education.

Beshear announced his plans to disband and recreate the Kentucky Board of Education on Tuesday, reports the NKY Tribune. He has designated 11 members who would begin service immediately.

The governor says his hand-picked selections were not chosen based on any partisan affiliation but based on their commitment to make Kentucky schools better.

Shortly after the announcement, 10 members of the current board took steps to challenge the action in court.

The group questions Beshear’s authority to remove them before their terms end.

Beshear's action will likely be popular among educators who believe the education board and commissioner have advocated for charter schools at the risk of hurting traditional public schools.
