(Ripley County, Ind.) - A 40-year prison sentenced has been given to a Ripley County man who attempted to shoot police officers.

Timmy W. Bowman, 49, of Holton, was convicted in March in Ripley County Circuit Court of Attempted Murder, Pointing a Firearm, Domestic Battery and Invasion of Privacy.

Bowman was arrested in October 2016 following a domestic violence call he was at the center of. He had pulled a gun on family members. When police arrived, he fired a shot toward officers, who returned fire and struck Bowman. He was taken into custody after being treated at a hospital.

Judge Ryan King delivered the sentence Tuesday, giving Bowman 40 ½ years in prison and a year on probation. King cited the facts of the case, the harm inflicted on the victims, Bowman’s lack of remorse, and that a child witnessed the crime.

Victims from Bowman’s family and police officers were in the courtroom for the sentencing. Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel said he hopes the sentence will provide some closure to the family which has suffered losses in the past few years.

Hertel also urged people to thank police officers for what they do, especially in dangerous situations like the one Bowman caused in 2016.

"Many times police officers come into contact with people who are at their worst and difficult to deal with. These men and women protect and uphold our laws, but they also risk their lives so that our families can be safe. They aren’t recognized enough, but in this case someone tried to take their lives and it became even more clear for someone integrally involved in the system how dangerous their job can be," Hertel said.
