Dillsboro Photo Contest Could Put Your Entries In A Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit

Local photographers are being asked to submit photos illustrating Dillsboro’s past, present and future.

(Dillsboro, Ind.) - A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian museum about rural America is coming to Dillsboro, but the local library wants to give it a hometown spin with photographers’ help.

The Dillsboro Public Library is hosting the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program will include the exhibit titled Crossroads: Change in Rural America September 7 through October 20.

Local content is needed for the traveling exhibit. Area photographers are welcome to submit their entries to a photo contest about Dillsboro’s past, present and future through August 6, 2019.

Entries must be printed 8” by 10” photos delivered to the library in-person or by mail. One amateur winner and one professional winner of the photo contest will each receive a $100 gift card.

The Crossroads exhibit highlights the changes and challenges faced by small communities.

“Since 1900, the percentage of Americans living in rural areas dropped from 60 percent to 17 percent, yet the vast majority of America’s physical landscape remains rural. "Crossroads" looks at this remarkable societal change and how rural Americans responded,” the library says.

The Dillsboro branch of the Aurora Public Library District is one of only six locations in Indiana to be hosting the Smithsonian exhibit. Interactive displays exploring the themes of community, identity, land use, and managing change are part of it.
