A controversial abortion bill being considered in Ohio's legislature has drawn protests.
(Columbus, OH) -- Protests erupted at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus as a controversial measure passed the Senate Wednesday.
Protesters shouted down lawmakers yesterday as the so-called "heartbeat bill" passed the Senate by a vote of 18-13. The bill now goes back to the House.
The legislation would ban abortion after the first heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
If the House passes the measure as expected Thursday, it will then head to Governor John Kasich, who vetoed a similar bill in 2016. He has said he would veto this latest bill, too.
The state’s Republican Governor-elect, Mike DeWine, has said he would sign such a bill, but DeWine won’t take office until January.
