Changes During Madison Bridge Closure

Madison-Milton Bridge

(Madison, Ind.) - Indiana and Kentucky commuters who use the Madison-Milton Bridge are being reminded about its upcoming five day closure April 25-29.

As crews prepare for the opening of a new $103 million bridge later this year, drivers will see changes on both sides of the river.

In Madison, the intersection of SR 56 and Ferry St. will convert to a 3-way stop. A 3-way stop will be placed at Ferry St. and Vaughn Dr. in Madison.

In Milton, northbound traffic from US 421 onto the temporary ramp leading to the bridge will be free-flowing with no stop signs. There will be a stop sign at the end of the temporary ramp in Milton for southbound traffic. There will be a stop sign for vehicles traveling from the Milton boat ramp onto Ferry St.

Ferry service will be provided during the closure to transport emergency services vehicles across the Ohio River. The Milton boat ramp will be closed for public access during this time.

The stop at KY 36 for southbound traffic from Ferry Street in Milton will be maintained as it is now.

During the closure, drivers will detour to the Markland Locks and Dam Bridge, 26 miles upstream, or Louisville, 46 miles downstream.

Earlier this month, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet lowered the weight limit on teh bridge from 15 tons to just three tons after significant deterioration of the 82-year-old bridge was discovered.

The Madison-Milton Bridge handles about 8,000 vehicles per day.
