(Bright, Ind.) - Karen Schebler has received a grant from the Betty McLaughlin Endowment for Family Literacy Nights.

Schebler, a kindergarten teacher at Bright Elementary School, used the funding to host monthly Family Literacy Nights at Bright Elementary.

Each month, a different theme was selected and a variety of leveled books, crafts, and snacks were provided to families.

"We had a guest reader each month, provided instructional support to families when needed, and provided book lists and reading challenges for the students," said Schebler.

"It was wonderful to be able to host these evenings where families could explore literacy in a variety of ways. They had many families attend every month. They enjoyed watching several kindergarten students grow in their confidence levels- both academically and socially. They were also able to build relationships with families of new students, and strengthen bonds with older students and families," Schebler continued.

The grant was made possible by the generosity of the McLaughlin family and the Dearborn County Retired Teacher Foundation.
