(Florence, Ky.) - Boone County Schools cut 50 teachers and other staff last year, and with mounting budget problems the district is likely to lay off more employees this year.
School district leaders anticipate a $2.4 million reduction in their budget, largely because of less funding coming from the state.
Superintendent Randy Poe told the Kentucky Enquirer the school board has approved a draft budget for now, until it’s known how state lawmakers will address school funding questions. The 2012 fiscal year begins July 1.
Last year, the state was able to cushion the hardship of dwindling revenues by plugging public education funding with federal stimulus money.
Poe told the newspaper that state leaders are likely to cut from SEEK, or Support Education Excellence in Kentucky, which allocates money to public school districts based on a county’s wealth.
