BMV Asks Customers To Limit Use Of Cash When Possible

Due to the national coin shortage, customers are asked to use cash when paying with exact change.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Hoosiers are being asked to pay with a credit card or check when completing transactions while at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). This request comes from a national coin shortage directly impacting branches across Indiana.

The United State Federal Reserve is experiencing a coin shortage that is impacting Financial Institutions across the country. The BMV is now unable to access additional coin inventory to restock supplies. Starting a few weeks ago, all BMV branches were required to take steps to alleviate the impact of the shortage. Now, customers are asked to only use cash when paying with exact change. Customers can now find signs explaining the situation and asking for alternate forms of payment.

The Federal Reserve has not provided a timeline for the shortage to be resolved. It is expected that coin inventories will return to previous levels when the coin supply chain returned to normal circulation patterns.
