(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Generally speaking, those in the Millennial and post-Millennial generations today can code computer software, gain thousands of social media followers, and push for social change.

But, can they figure out how to locate an electrical panel to switch the breaker powering their computer, save money for their future so they aren’t posting selfies in poverty, and change the oil in the car they use to travel to their protest?

Tom Steuver is offering some fatherly advice to those entering adulthood who might need a little help accomplishing the daily tasks it takes to live a happy life. The Bright resident has authored the book On Your Own: Important Information for the Young Adult, published last year.

“I’ve got three kids,” says Steuver, a computer systems administrator by trade. “Most of the schools don’t teach all this or hardly any of it. Parents aren’t really doing much either. I just started taking notes down of things I wanted to give my kids in the way of their own finances, their own car, or their own home.”

The 86-page book includes some helpful hints, tips and guidance on modern life’s basics such as creating a personal or household budget, knowing the difference between a credit card and a debit card, buying insurance, making home repairs, and backing up the data on your computer.

Of course, the book serving as a manual to modern American life also tackles the dreaded task of changing your vehicle’s engine oil on your own.

“Some think you just drive it and put gas in it,” Steuver quips.

Each spring after the graduation ceremonies and parties, the new high school or college grads often enter the real world with a diploma but unable to leave the nest.

“They are going to have a wake-up call and I just wanted to help prepare them for that.”

On Your Own: Important Information for the Young Adult is available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Google Play.
