(Aurora, Ind.) – Appeals on Wheels is coming to South Dearborn High School.

Indiana’s second highest court will conduct a live, in person oral argument in the South Dearborn High School auditorium on Tuesday, May 10 at 10: 30 a.m.

A panel consisting of Judge L. Mark Bailey, Judge Melissa S. May, and Judge Leanna K. Weissman will hear Casillas v. State.

In the case, Leon Casillas appeals following his convictions of Level 2 felony dealing in narcotic drug and Level 6 felony possession of methamphetamine and his adjudication as a habitual offender. The full case synopsis can be viewed here.

The oral argument will conclude with a question-and-answer session with the audience about the judiciary. However, the judges are unable to speak about the specific case.

The event is open to the public and will last approximately one hour.

The Court of Appeals hears oral arguments across Indiana to enable Hoosiers to observe the real-world issues that face the court and to learn more about the court’s indispensable role in Indiana government.  Audiences also get to observe skilled legal arguments and advocacy by some of Indiana’s best lawyers, against a backdrop of case-specific facts and statutory and constitutional law.

This argument marks the court’s ninth Appeals on Wheels event in 2022.
