Another Crash In U.S. 50 Work Zone; Police Urge Drivers To Slow Down

Crashes in new construction zone are happening too frequently.

(Dillsboro, Ind.) – For the second consecutive day, a vehicle crash occurred in a construction zone on U.S. 50 in Dearborn County.

On Tuesday morning, a semi and a pickup truck were involved in a collision on U.S. 50 just west of Aurora. The accident happened in a section of the highway where both directions of travel were shifted to the north side of the highway, with only traffic cones separating the vehicles heading opposite directions. U.S. 50 was closed for about an hour following the crash.

Multiple vehicles were again involved in a crash on Wednesday morning just before 8:00 in the work zone on U.S. 50 at the intersection with State Road 262. One of the vehicles rolled over, Dillsboro Police said. Luckily, nobody was seriously hurt.

U.S. 50 in that area normally has a 60 MPH speed limit, but Dillsboro Police Chief Ryan Brandt worries that many drivers are not following the lower 45 MPH limit in the construction zones, which is leading to the accidents.

“Pay particular attention when crossing or pulling out into traffic,” Brandt cautions.

Brandt says the Indiana Department of Transportation has been contacted several times about adding more construction and lower speed limit signage.
