(Greendale, Ind.) - The City of Greendale is going to use a newly awarded grant to construct a new pedestrian and bicycle trail.

Mayor Alan Weiss said the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has awarded the city a $200,000 grant for a new, one-mile paved trail. The city is matching the grant with $50,000 in local funding.

The 12-foot-wide walking and biking trail will extend from the city utility building to the Lawrenceburg Conservancy District athletic fields. It will switchback down the hill from behind the utility building.

Part of the city’s 2015 trail master plan, the new path will connect with a Lawrenceburg trail. The trail will also connect with the new bike lanes placed on Ridge Avenue last year.

“This gives residents who don’t want to drive the ability to just hop on a bike with their kids and go down to the ball fields for practices or games,” said Weiss.

Mayor Weiss said construction could start this fall. The trail should be ready by the summer of 2020.

Weiss thanks the Lawrenceburg Conservancy District Board of Directors for their cooperation on the project and the city employees who worked to make the grant possible.
