(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The state of Indiana is now allowing some Hoosiers to file their taxes online for free.
Officials rolled out the new Indiana Freefile system Tuesday, which will let people file both their federal and state taxes for free beginning in January 2012. The system replaces Indiana’s I-File, which had been in place since 1999.
To qualify, the Indiana Department of Revenue says taxpayers cannot have an adjusted gross income more than $57,000.
Those filers will need to use one of four online tax preparers which will support Indiana in 2011: H&R Block, Online Tax, TaxHawk, and TurboTax.
Department of Revenue Commissioner John Eckart said about one million households will be eligible.
“Indiana Freefile is a big step forward for Indiana taxpayers, both in terms of ease of use and convenience. Qualifying users can now file both their federal and state taxes at the same location using very sophisticated professional software. Plus, it’s free. That’s pretty hard to beat,” said Eckart.
